Begin with the B-flat

D natural minor contains D, E, F, G, A, Bb, and C. Its one-flat signature is shared with F major. Bb belongs to this starting collection. Keep the note spelling visible when locating it on the keyboard so that it remains the sixth degree of D minor.

A flat and a sharp can appear together

D harmonic minor keeps Bb and changes C to C#. In ascending classical melodic minor, Bb also rises to B natural. The descending melodic version uses C and Bb again. The form selector therefore changes specific scale degrees; it does not apply a rule that every note must use only flats or only sharps.

Compare three routes back to D

Try A-Bb-C-D, then A-Bb-C#-D, then A-B-C#-D. Leave a short pause after the final D and say the name of the form. Next, play down from the upper D using the displayed descending row. Before restarting, check whether the next sixth degree is Bb or B natural.

Check the transition before a full run

For the sourced natural and harmonic one-octave ascents, the right-hand third finger plays F before the thumb moves to G. Practice that small connection slowly, then add the selected ending. The left-hand row has its own sequence. Do not transfer a right-hand crossing instruction to the left hand.

Frequently asked questions

What notes are in D natural minor?

D natural minor contains D, E, F, G, A, Bb, C. One octave is D–E–F–G–A–Bb–C–D. The final tonic repeats the starting note an octave higher.

Which notes change in D harmonic and melodic minor?

Harmonic minor changes degree 7 from C to C#: D–E–F–G–A–Bb–C#–D. In the classical melodic-minor ascent, degree 6 changes from Bb to B and degree 7 is C#: D–E–F–G–A–B–C#–D.

What is the descending classical melodic-minor sequence?

For the classical scale-exercise convention, descend D–C–Bb–A–G–F–E–D. In the displayed right-hand register that is D5–C5–Bb4–A4–G4–F4–E4–D4. Degrees 6 and 7 return to their natural-minor values, Bb and C. Do not simply reverse the raised ascending form; the jazz melodic-minor convention is a different choice.

Which fingers are supported for each hand and range?

Natural minor: right hand ascending 1–2–3–1–2–3–4–5; left hand ascending 5–4–3–2–1–3–2–1. Notes-only combinations: right hand descending, left hand descending. Harmonic minor: right hand ascending 1–2–3–1–2–3–4–5; left hand ascending 5–4–3–2–1–3–2–1. Notes-only combinations: right hand descending, left hand descending. Melodic minor (classical exercise): notes only; no fingering row is source-checked. All supported finger rows here cover one octave with hands separately. A missing row is not permission to reverse or borrow another form’s fingering.

How do I match the keyboard, score and printed note names?

First match the tonic, minor form, hand or view, direction and one-octave range. Then read the ordered note names with their octave numbers and compare each to the staff and highlighted key. The printout should state the same selection; a fixed PDF has its own named coverage. Keep written accidentals even when they share a physical key with another spelling.
