Use B-flat and E-flat as the baseline

G natural minor contains G, A, Bb, C, D, Eb, and F. Its signature has Bb and Eb, shared with Bb major. Bb remains the third degree in all three minor forms here. Keep that note in place while comparing the changes nearer the upper G.

F-sharp belongs to the harmonic form

G harmonic minor changes F to F# and keeps Eb. Ascending classical melodic minor also raises Eb to E natural, while melodic descent returns through F and Eb. The coexistence of Bb and F# is intentional. Each spelling shows its own degree in the G-minor scale.

Practice an ending without changing the opening

First locate G-A-Bb-C-D. Add Eb-F-G for natural minor, Eb-F#-G for harmonic minor, or E-F#-G for melodic ascent. Stop after each ending and identify it. For a return-trip check, choose a form before starting at the upper G, then read the descending sequence rather than relying on the ascent you just played.

Rehearse the crossing in context

The sourced one-octave natural and harmonic ascents use right-hand finger 3 on Bb followed by the thumb on C. In the left-hand row, the thumb reaches D before finger 3 continues to Eb. Practice these connections separately, keeping the hand and selected form labels attached to your notes.

Frequently asked questions

What notes are in G natural minor?

G natural minor contains G, A, Bb, C, D, Eb, F. One octave is G–A–Bb–C–D–Eb–F–G. The final tonic repeats the starting note an octave higher.

Which notes change in G harmonic and melodic minor?

Harmonic minor changes degree 7 from F to F#: G–A–Bb–C–D–Eb–F#–G. In the classical melodic-minor ascent, degree 6 changes from Eb to E and degree 7 is F#: G–A–Bb–C–D–E–F#–G.

What is the descending classical melodic-minor sequence?

For the classical scale-exercise convention, descend G–F–Eb–D–C–Bb–A–G. In the displayed right-hand register that is G5–F5–Eb5–D5–C5–Bb4–A4–G4. Degrees 6 and 7 return to their natural-minor values, Eb and F. Do not simply reverse the raised ascending form; the jazz melodic-minor convention is a different choice.

Which fingers are supported for each hand and range?

Natural minor: right hand ascending 1–2–3–1–2–3–4–5; left hand ascending 5–4–3–2–1–3–2–1. Notes-only combinations: right hand descending, left hand descending. Harmonic minor: right hand ascending 1–2–3–1–2–3–4–5; left hand ascending 5–4–3–2–1–3–2–1. Notes-only combinations: right hand descending, left hand descending. Melodic minor (classical exercise): notes only; no fingering row is source-checked. All supported finger rows here cover one octave with hands separately. A missing row is not permission to reverse or borrow another form’s fingering.

How do I match the keyboard, score and printed note names?

First match the tonic, minor form, hand or view, direction and one-octave range. Then read the ordered note names with their octave numbers and compare each to the staff and highlighted key. The printout should state the same selection; a fixed PDF has its own named coverage. Keep written accidentals even when they share a physical key with another spelling.
