How seventh chords are built

Seventh chords add a fourth chord tone above a triad. The four families on this page differ by triad quality and the quality of the seventh. The family formulas are dominant7: 1–3–5–b7; major7: 1–3–5–7; minor7: 1–b3–5–b7; halfDiminished7: 1–b3–b5–b7. Written note names remain visible even when two names share the same piano key.

Four positions for four chord tones

Each detail page keeps the same four chord tones across root position, first inversion, second inversion and third inversion. The lowest chord tone changes while the chord root and written spelling stay the same.
