Natural minor: five flats

The b flat minor scale in natural form is B♭–C–D♭–E♭–F–G♭–A♭–B♭. Its signature contains B♭, E♭, A♭, D♭ and G♭, shared with D♭ major. C–D♭ and F–G♭ are the half steps. B♭ is the tonic; D♭ gives the minor third.

A natural, then G natural

The harmonic b flat minor scale raises A♭ to A natural in both directions: B♭–C–D♭–E♭–F–G♭–A–B♭. Classical melodic ascent also raises G♭ to G: B♭–C–D♭–E♭–F–G–A–B♭. Its descent restores the flats: B♭–A♭–G♭–F–E♭–D♭–C–B♭.

Read the flat spelling on both staves

For the b flat minor scale, the right hand uses treble clef and the left hand uses bass clef. Natural-minor fingers are read from the B♭ source staff for each direction. Harmonic ascent has a separate source row. Harmonic descent and all melodic-minor fingerings display Notes only; do not copy another form’s fingers.

Compare A-sharp without respelling this page

Practise the b flat minor scale by listening to F–G♭–A♭–B♭, then F–G♭–A–B♭. Compare the A-sharp minor reference using the related link: it sounds on the same piano keys but uses seven sharps. Keep B♭, C, D♭, E♭ and F on this page rather than substituting A♯, B♯, C♯, D♯ and E♯.

Chords and scale degrees in B♭ natural minor

Each degree of B♭ natural minor has a name, and stacking every other note from that degree gives the triad built on it. Roman numerals use capitals for major triads, lower case for minor and ° for diminished.

D♭ major is the relative major of B♭ minor. Both keys use the same notes and key signature, but the major key starts on degree 3.

B♭ natural minor uses five black keys: B♭, D♭, E♭, G♭ and A♭.

On a narrow screen, scroll this table horizontally to read every column.

In natural minor, the chord on degree 5 is minor. Harmonic minor raises degree 7 from A♭ to A, the leading tone. That makes the dominant chord major and gives V7, the dominant seventh of B♭ minor. F7: F – A – C – E♭.

Frequently asked questions

What are the notes in the B-flat minor chord scale?

The natural b flat minor scale contains B♭, C, D♭, E♭, F, G♭ and A♭. Its triads are B♭ minor, C diminished, D♭ major, E♭ minor, F minor, G♭ major and A♭ major. Harmonic minor raises A♭ to A, making the F chord major: F–A–C.

What's the difference between B flat and A sharp?

B♭ and A♯ name the same piano key in equal temperament. The b flat minor scale has five flats and spells B♭–C–D♭–E♭–F–G♭–A♭. A♯ natural minor uses seven sharps and spells A♯–B♯–C♯–D♯–E♯–F♯–G♯. Keep the spelling required by the score.

Which fingerings are included for one octave?

The b flat minor scale includes separately checked natural-minor ascending and descending rows for each hand and harmonic-minor ascent. Melodic fingers and harmonic descent remain Notes only. The octave selector stays at one: these rows do not establish two-octave connections or continuous turnarounds.
